What is The Photographic Society of Singapore? PSS is a non-profit organization (managed by the Council which consisted of a group of elected volunteers) founded in 1950 by a group of passionate photographers to promote the art of photography to the masses. Over the years, many prominent and budding photographers grew with PSS and the membership strength today is about 1000. Anyone who is interested in learning the art of photography is welcome to join us, be it amateur or professional photographers. We have members from all walks of life, plumbers to taxi drivers to doctors to lawyers to ministers What are the various types of memberships?Currently, there are 4 types of membership being the Junior membership for those below 18, ordinary membership for those 18 and above, oversea membership and affiliate membership for organizations. Do I need to own a camera before I join the Society?This is based on personal preference. The Society, besides organizing photographic outing trips, it also organizes courses, talks, workshops and exhibition to enable the members to widen their knowledge and scope. Cameras are not needed at these activities. However, it is advisable that members own their personal camera so that they can practice what they have learnt. At the end of the day, it is all about practice to perfection. How to become a member?You may sign up as a member on the spot at the clubhouse, or mail us the application form by post with a cheque payable to THE PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY OF SINGAPORE. 2 passport size photographs are required. The membership card will take about 1 month to be processed. The cards will be mailed to the members. Renewal of membership?Members may renew their membership by posting their expired membership card to the clubhouse with cheque payable to "The Photographic Society of Singapore" and a letter addressed to the Administrator or renew on the spot at the clubhouse. It will take about 1 month for the membership card to be done up. What are the benefits of being a member?Members will be informed of our activities like talks, exhibitions, workshops, courses, outings etc. Members may use the darkroom as well as joining the photographic courses conducted by the Society at member's rate. Members will receive journals from the Society every quarter, as well as regular e-mail updates and monthly PSS Update Newsletter. The Clubhouse is located at Selegie Arts Centre, the three storied yellow coloured stand alone building opposite Paradiz Centre. Mr Bean Café occupies the first storey. We are on the 2nd and 3rd storey. What are the pre-requisite for the courses conducted at the Society?This will be based on the type of courses you are interested to attend. Pls refer to the course pamphlets or call us at 334 3361 to enquire. How often will the courses be conducted?We will try to schedule a new batch of courses once every 3 months.You may call the clubhouse to enquire about the courses or via e-mail What options do the members have after attending the courses?Members may wish to conduct solo or group exhibitions at the Loke Wan Tho Gallery on the 3rd storey, or join the PSS Member Competition or any other competitions organized by PSS, or members may wish to attempt for the Society's Distinction titles such as the Fellowship, Associateship or Licentiateship. For more info, please click here. Members who wish to contribute further may like to volunteer their services in the Society as a sub-committee or Council member. Interested parties, pls write in or e-mail to the Honorary Secretary. One need not be well versed in photography to be a volunteer helping out in the sub committee or the Council.
